Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is very common among children and teens, and can affect personal, academic and social domains. Inattention, difficulty concentrating and modulating focus, becoming easily distracted and difficulty with organization, while concerning to some parents and teachers, can become distressing and overwhelming for children. Sometimes, unmanaged ADHD symptoms can lead to anxiety and affect self esteem. Behavioral problems can arise due to challenges with impulse control, although most often, due to the nature of ADHD in addition to the child or adolescent’s developmental stage, this is not their fault. I am fortunate to work closely with a network of amazing
neuropsychologists who are available for diagnostic clarification and recommendations as needed. Oftentimes, a multidisciplinary approach including executive functioning skills coaching and collaboration with the academic team can be extremely beneficial, in addition to the range of ADHD medications now available.
ADHD impacts adults too and can exacerbate challenges with organization, punctuality, communication, within relationships, and in managing important life tasks, both at home and in the workplace.
